Communities of Practice (CoP) are groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis. Wenger, McDermott, and Snyder 2002 |
The Need for an Asia Pacific Regional MDG CoP (AP-MDG-CoP)
With little more than seven years to the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), efforts to reduce poverty in Asia and the Pacific show mixed results, with several countries in the region striving to meet their targets. Although the Asia Pacific Region has made rapid progress towards many of the MDGs, not all countries are making sufficient progress and none are currently on track to meet all eight goals by 2015.
Sharing Knowledge, Achieving Goals
In response to challenges faced by countries in the region, a joint initiative by UNDP Regional Centre in Colombo, UNESCAP, and ADB will draw upon the collective knowledge, resources, and experience of practitioners working in the region. The AP-MDG-CoP is a network where MDG practitioners exchange knowledge and find partners, synergies, and solutions to reach the collective goal of achieving the MDGs.
Community Focus
The focus of the community will be on MDG issues and challenges faced by countries in the Asia Pacific Region, ranging from macroeconomic issues to the localization of the MDGs.
AP-MDG Community Services
The AP-MDG-CoP will offer the following services to help members of the CoP to connect, learn, network, share knowledge, and find solutions.
- Queries
Members can submit a query to request information, experiences, or best practices and receive responses from practitioners from around the region. - eDiscussions
The network will provide the space for virtual discussions on emerging or critical issues related to the MDGs. Topics will be selected based on suggestions from the community and the discussions will be moderated by a guest expert. - eConsultations
Members will have the opportunity to consult with the community on ideas or draft documents. The community will offer input or feedback. Draft documents might be strategy papers, technical papers, etc. - Community Website
Members will have access to a website where they can learn about other members, access the archive database of CoP contributions, and obtain updates on MDG initiatives, progress, and achievements in the region.
